Oct 24, 2019 Aerofly FS 2 Flight Simulator Review Given the early access releases of Aerofly FS 2, it might be tempting to dismiss the program and move on to other more established flight sim programs. However, the fact is, once you do give it a try you will very likely find yourself begrudgingly liking what is unfolding before you.

There's no air traffic control or AI air traffic and IFR and weather simulation is quite basic.XPlane 11 is a traditional, fully featured flight sim which is even used by some flight schools and hobbyist pilots for procedural training. However, Aerofly FS2 has significantly better performance and has a better VR implementation. If you're a newbie to flight simulation then it's a good place to start as it may offer a better sensation of flight in VR.
If you're a real-world pilot then you may want to jump straight into XP11. Aerofly FS2 is better in VR but it is still in early access so a lot of the features are not in place yet. It does have an excellent starting foundation though and is intended to become a full featured realistic sim. X-Plane is a full featured sim already but it doesn't run as well or look as good in VR.
You can download a demo of Xplane and Flyinside to see how it performs on your system before committing to it. I haven't purchased the full version of X-Plane yet but I do like a lot of what it has to offer. I just know that playing in VR is really my interest and Aerofly just works SO MUCH better. Flight Sims on PC are really CURSED. It's a topic that can drive anyone mad. Let me explain.P3D uses an ancient 32bit engine, means it can't even use your available memory.FSX same. It's ANCIENT.XP-11, although the latest and possibly best looking of the current sim RUNS LIKE CRAP MOLASSES with absolutely lackluster performance.
Not only that, in contrast to what they announced before they released it, you need FlyInside for VR (no native VR which is ridiculous!) which not only adds another performance drop on an already incredibly slow engine but also requires that you buy it just be able to use VR. Also dropped XP-11 support. (Possible not even an issue since XP-11 otherwise looks great, but as said, performance it the main issue here).Aerofly FS 2 is by far the best performing sim but the graphics are horrible close up.
It's low-res textures and the sim only looks good if you fly high, otherwise it looks like total poop. There is also no autogen and many other features of 'serious' sims missing, as some already pointed out.Fight sims on PC are really so frustrating right now that you WILL run into a disappointment no matter which one you choose. I have to agree 100% with this. I was so excited for VR flight simulation, but it is still a generation or two away. Aerofly is the best VR experience right now, all the other 'true' sims look like total horse shit and run like crap on even a powerful system.I've basically ditched flight sim for this generation and will wait for higher res HMD's with foveated rendering, as well as newly optimized code that abandons the ancient Microsoft Flight engine, and one that supports SLI.It may be awhile. Flight Sim Junkie. It depends what you're looking for. There is no clear cut answer.Xplane is wonderful for realism, but man does it need beefy hardware to get even close to acceptable performance in VR.
It's also a heavy 'upfront' curve. It's going to take some time to get what you want out of it.
Definitely not plug and play. If you can reach the bar though, it's pretty excellent.Aerofly FS2 is a nice middle ground. It's hella easy to setup and run and it runs very efficiently in VR. But, it's more on the 'arcadey' side of things. It's got some decent realism to it, but it feels a bit like a game.Prepar3d and FSX can be clunky as hell from a UI perspective and their flight dynamics aren't super-impressive. Although they are 'passable'.
The UI sucks. No two ways about it. It also can take a lot to get them where you want them, but for overall 'realism' (without monster hardware), there really isn't anything like them. One sim tops them for flight dynamics (which I'll get to), but you can fly real planes (that work like they're supposed to) in real terrain with real nav aids. You can even get ATC and Weather services for them.
They're exceptionally long in the tooth (Microsoft Flight Simulator is older than Windows!)If you're looking for straight flight dynamics. DCS.Holy hell!I fly in real life. That's the closest sim to the real thing that I've touched. It lacks in many other aspects, but the flight dynamics are top notch.I have every flight sim I can get my hands on, but if you were going to take them all away. The last one that I'd let go of is P3D.But that's me.My main concern is flying real planes in real settings with real navaids/etc.If I wanted to just have a 'Good Enough' flight sim that was fairly realistic (aka, not a fighting game), then FS2 is hard to beat. Actually, P3D is a better choice IMHO.Yes, it 'looks' worse at first glance. But that's it's horrible user interface. The loading screens are based on FSX's horrible UI and are just cleaned up a bit. FS2's loaders by contrast are beautiful.BUT.The actual sim?
P3D is a quality sim. Once you're flying the planes, it's very good. It's a lot lighter on the computer than Xplane.
Xplane's great, but it requires a lot of horsepower.Wana know something even stranger? You can't fix FSX's clunky ass loader UI. It just sucks. But if you tweak it out. You can get FSX running almost identically to P3D. (not super shocking as they are the same base program). The only real difference between the two (after you've tweaked them) is that P3D has cockpit shadows. So my advice is always, grab FSX on sale (it's often available for $5-$10) and try it with the FlyInside demo. Most people on a budget just aren't going to have the hardware to run Xplane even reasonably well. Yeah, that's what I did.
I picked up FSX on sale and tried it with the Flyinside demo. That is what lead me to the graphics comparison between P3D and X-Plane. Stock FSX definitely ran better for me than X-Plane but it looked terrible in comparison. I looked around and found that you could add a lot of expensive mods to FSX and get it looking really nice, so I did add one of the free Orbx scenery and texture samples to it. That improved the look but of course it also lessened the frame rate. Even then it still didn't look as good to me as stock X-Plane but maybe I just didn't spend enough time tweaking it.
I also should mention that I am running a i7 6700 and 1080ti so I am able to get playable framerates with X-Plane in VR although it still is nowhere near as smooth an experience as what I get in FS2.I had just assumed that P3D would be a similar experience as what I had with FSX. Is there any kind of demo version available for P3D?.
